Hardcover. 4to and small 4to (respectively). White pebble-grain paper over boards with green and orange lettering, pictorial dust jacket; stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. 192pp; 192pp. Extensive illustrations. Fine/near fine; near fine. In 1955 Edward Steichen curated the famed exhibit "The Family of Man," which the resulting exhibition catalogue described as "The greatest photographic exhibition of all time -- 503 pictures from 68 countries." These two titles are its sequels, "The Family of Children" (1977) subtitled on the jacket "Childhood around the world -- the greatest photographic collection ever made" and "The Family of Woman" (1979) subtitled on front wrapper "A world-wide photographic perception of female life and being." Noted photographer Wayne F. Miller (1913-2013) served as associate curator for Steichen and eight of his images are included in that landmark work -- and several of his images appear in these sequels as well. Front flyleaf of the first volume (The Family of Children) bears a fine decorative-edged bookplate signed by Miller in black ballpoint in old age. Co-published by Ridge Press, who do not designate edition in a consistent, verifiable manner. A superb pair.
