About this Item: New York: Simon & Schuster, (1983.) dj, 1983. First printing. A novel that takes place in a Mexican-American East Los Angeles neighborhood, the story of one turbulent year in the life of the Medina family, as told by young Rudy Medina, Jr., better known as Chato. Described as the first novel by an author who had grown up in Los Angeles, this received much praise as well as the distinguished fiction award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. The only problem was that it was later revealed that Santiago was the pseudonym of Daniel James, an Anglo from a wealthy family who grew up in Kansas, and was 73 at the time this was published, James, who wrote several screenplays, had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era, and had his Hollywood career destroyed, and used that as his reason for publishing under a pseudonym. While there is no simple answer to the controversy raised by this book, it was written as a work of fiction, and not autobiography. 285 pp. Fine in near fine dust jacket (short closed tear along fold of dj flap).
