Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Wells, H. G. First and last things: a confession of faith and rule of life. The definitive edition. Thinker's Library; no.1. London: Watts and Co., [1930]. Hardback, VG. Tan boards illustrated and lettered in black to front and spine. Boards slightly bumped to corners. Binding strong and tight. Some tanning to endpapers. vii, 150pp. Top edge of text block slightly dust-stained. Contents clean and bright. First and Last Things is a 1908 work of philosophy setting forth his beliefs in four "books" entitled "Metaphysics," "Of Belief," "Of General Conduct," and "Some Personal Things." Parts of the book were published in the Independent Magazine in July and August 1908. Wells revised the book extensively in 1917, in response to his religious conversion, but later published a further revision in 1929 that restored much of the book to its earlier form. Its main intellectual influences are Darwinism and certain German thinkers Wells had read, such as August Weismann. The pragmatism of William James, who had become a friend of Wells, was also an influence. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. Wells is a work of philosophy that set forth his beliefs in four 'books' entitled 'Metaphysics,' 'Of Belief,' 'Of General Conduct,' and 'Some Personal Things.' The book was written at a time when Wells's 'private life was to a considerable degree in turmoil. Excerpt: ' It will be necessary to take up the most abstract of these questions of belief first, the metaphysical questions. It may be that to many readers the opening sections may seem the driest and least attractive. But I would ask them to begin at the beginning and read straight on, because much that follows this metaphysical book cannot be appreciated at its proper value without a grasp of these preliminaries.' 172 pp. Englisch.
