First Edition
First edition. First edition. Cloth, 319pp., preface, appendix. McConnell was a Private in the 6th U.S. Cavalry when he arrived in Galveston in November, 1866. He served at Fort Belknap and Fort Richardson on the Texas frontier until 1871, when McConnell settled in Jacksboro, where Fort Richardson was located. "This is the most lively and authentic account of cavalry life in west Texas after the Civil War. Col. Harold B. Simpson states: 'Seldom will one find so much information on soldiering on the frontiers as in McConnell's book. It is easy to read and hard to lay down once it is started'. McConnell gives us the best surviving account of what it was like to be an ordinary cavalryman in occupied Texas as well as of life on the frontier outposts after the war. He also gives an excellent description of Texas cowboys on a spree in Kansas after a cattle drive."---John H. Jenkins. The Appendix is authored Robert G. Carter: "The Cowboy's Verdict". An excellent account of General Sherman's reaction to the boastful claims of Satanta leading hostile Kiowas in the killing of the teamsters of the Warren wagon train near Jacksboro. The arrest, trial, and imprisonment of Satanta and Big Tree, as well as the killing of old Setank is recorded here. A couple of small spots on rear cover and some light general wear. Very good. Text block clean and tight. An attractive copy protected in a custom slipcase.
