Some cover wear. 'As much as anything, World War I turned on the fate of Ukraine'. The decision to go to war in 1914 had catastrophic consequences for Russia. The result was revolution, civil war and famine in 1917-20, followed by decades of communist rule. Dominic Lieven's powerful and original book, based on exhaustive and unprecedented study in Russian and many other foreign archives, explains why this suicidal decision was made and explores the world of the men who made it, thereby consigning their entire class to death or exile and making their country the victim of a uniquely terrible political experiment under Lenin and Stalin. Dominic Lieven (born 19 January 1952) is an English professor at Cambridge University (Senior Research Fellow, Trinity College) and a Fellow of the British Academy. His book Russia Against Napoleon won the Wolfson Prize for History and the Prize of the Foundation Napoleon for the best foreign work on the Napoleonic era. Lieven is a writer on Russian history, on empires and emperors, on the Napoleonic era and the First World War, and on European aristocracy. Lieven is on the Editorial Board of Journal of Intelligence and Terrorism Studies. He was head of the History Department at the London School of Economics from 2009 to 2011; he was appointed lecturer there in 1978, and professor in 1993. He was appointed to his current position at the University of Cambridge in 2011. TLS BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2016. FINANCIAL TIMES BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2015. WINNER OF THE PUSHKIN HOUSE RUSSIAN BOOK PRIZE 2016. 'Magisterial. reveals how much is at stake for world order in Ukraine and Syria.' Rachel Polonsky. Extracts from a review in the New York Times by Serge Schmemann. Dominic Lieven's stated reason for this contribution to the centenary literature on World War I is to place Russia "where it belongs, at the very center" of the war's history. Certainly the war proved to be at the center of Russian history, leading to revolution, dictatorship, repression and more war. Mr. Lieven, a well-respected British scholar of Imperial Russia, makes the convincing case that World War I was really about the struggle of Russia and Germany for territory, status and influence in Eastern and Central Europe, in which the fate of Ukraine â" shades of today â" played a central role. In giving Russia's side of the story â" as he did in his well-received study of an earlier war, "Russia Against Napoleon: The Battle for Europe, 1807 to 1814" â" Mr. Lieven punctures the popular Western image of a reactionary autocracy stumbling into a suicidal war through misguided Slavic nationalism. There is that, but his Russia is also a vast empire and an economic powerhouse in the making, where a fledgling civil society and influential press often contributed to nationalist passions while a counterintuitively capable aristocratic elite wrestled with legitimate questions of where Russia's national interests lay in the complex and rapidly changing world of the early 20th century. His intimate familiarity with the Russia he describes and his extensive study of the letters, diaries and books of the chief actors in Russia's descent "towards the flames" â" many not hitherto accessible to hist.
