Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, stated first printing. Hard cover binding, 255 pp. Map endpapers. Terrible conflicts have been going on in the Balkans for centuries, and as Simon Winchester sees it, they are likely to go on for centuries to come. During the Kosovo crisis, Winchester remembered a trip there 20 years earlier and the people he met, and embarked on a parallel journey to help divine the true nature of the fractured region. He considers two great capitals, Vienna and Istanbul, as two poles of imperial rivalries from the past that continue to play a role in shaping the savage divisions of the Balkans today. With the war under way, he enlisted the aid of a linguist friend and traveled through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, and Turkey, arriving at the Golden Horn just as the war was officially declared over. Winchester managed to be in Macedonia on the day the NATO forces moved in to assume control of Kosovo?and because the commanding general was an old friend, he rode in with the liberating columns of troops and armor. This is not a book about the war, but rather a portrait of the region painted while the war was going on. Black remainder mark to bottom of pages, slight shelf wear to dustjacket, else as new. In protective mylar cover.

SIGNED hardcover first edition - First printing. The title comes from the following comment by Winchester: 'if the underlying crust of the earth in the Balkans is cracked and shifing along great fault lines, so the people of the Balkans are affectd by the faulty lines made by man.' Although written while the war in Kosovo was actually happening, this is not so much a book about the war as it is an intimate portrait of the area and the people painted during a time of war and conflict. It is also an attempt to understand what has led the region to violence - and the causes that will inevitably result in more violence in the future. Includes some suggestions for further reading. 255 pp, map endpapers. SIGNED by the author on the title page and dated in the year of publication. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket (a new, unread copy but with lower corners bumped).
