About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 861 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Inscribed by the author. First printing, with 'A' on copyright page, first issue jacket with authors photo on rear panel rather than reviews found on later issue jackets. Jones' first book, basis for the 1953 film starring Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, and Frank Sinatra. From Here to Eternity is the debut novel of American author James Jones, published by Scribner's in 1951. It is loosely based on Jones' experiences in the pre-World War II Hawaiian Division's 27th Infantry and the unit in which he served, Company E ("The Boxing Company"). Fellow company member Hal Gould said that while the novel was based on the company, including some depictions of actual persons, the characters are fictional and both the harsh conditions and described events are inventions. From Here to Eternity won the National Book Award and was named one of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library Board. There were three screen adaptations. Condition: Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. A stamp on the front free endpaper reading "Book No" with the number 1035 in holograph but this is the trade edition not the "Presentation Edition". Jacket lightly edge worn; small tears to cloth at head of spine; book and jacket very good. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # L505

About this Item: New York: ScribnerÕs, 1951, 1951. First Edition of the author's first book. 'Presentation' issue; numbered (No. 22, possibly an author's copy); signed by Jones. An exceptionally important association copy; inscribed at the top of the limitation leaf 'For Montgomery Clift - Who has worked very hard, and very enthusiastically, to make this book a good picture, and earned my undying gratitude, and friendship, because of it. Luck, Jim. At Hollywood (on a visit) March 7, 1953, Good luck with the shooting, Monty!' Under his signature on the limitation page (a little blotted, extending slightly below), he has inscribed it further, possibly after the movie was completed, or at least after seeing Clift's performance on film, 'This inscription is such a poor appreciation of what I feel for you, man! I dont [sic] think you could be Prewitt. I think you are Prewitt! I like you, pal. Jim.' The 1953 release won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture; Frank Sinatra's win for Best Supporting Actor is credited with reviving his career. Clift was nominated for Best Actor, but lost to William Holden for Stalag 17, yet, perhaps even more so in retrospect, this was Clift's picture, and his performance stands out from those of the rest of the cast, as excellent and praiseworthy as they were. Clift died in 1966, after which this book came into the possession of his twin sister, who passed away recently. Aside from the aforementioned blotting, very good in a jacket with wear and tear; in a custom clamshell box. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
