Map First Edition

Top: sheet: 21 5/8" x 56"; frame: 28 1/4" x 63". Bottom: sheet: 21 5/8" x 56 1/2"; frame: 28 1/4" x 63". Combined: sheets: 43 1/4" x 56 1/2"; frames: 56 1/2" x 63". Some tanning and soiling, mostly peripheral. Altogether an excellent set. (William) Henry Mouzon Jr. (1741-1807) was descended of a Hugeunot émigrés to the United States, settling eventually in South Carolina (modern Williamsburg Co.). Educated in France after his father's death, Mouzon was able to inject French mapmaking expertise from the schools of Sanson, de Fer, de l'Isle and others into the mapping of North America. His map of the Carolinas was indeed Accurate as the title boasts; it was a major leap in quality, and served as a vital resource -- widely distributed in Sayer and Bennett's American Atlas of 1776 -- for the American, French and British armies in the prosecution of the War of Independence and for some five decades further. To wit, George Washington's copy is preserved at the American Geographical Society, Rochambeau's copy (G3900 1775 .M6) at the Library of Congress and Sir Henry Clinton's (Maps 5-G-1775 Mo) at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. The map includes many features of the landscape -- especially rivers -- for the first time, or correctly for the first time. Tactical posts and settlements, especially west of the Cherokee settlement boundary, made the maps useful for a great many purposes beyond the prosecution of war. Insets of the harbors of Port Royal and of Charleston also made the map valuable for trade over water.
