Octavo, khaki cloth (hardcover), red letters, 451 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light rubbing and edgewear. From dust jacket: This is the first book to study in depth the momentous and decisive Battle of Antietam, a battle which hertofore has largely been ignored by historians. The result of nine years of careful and painstaking research, The Gleam of Bayonets is a comprehensive account of all the factors, events, and personalities which contributed to and composed this important moment of the Civil War. In addition to providing a scholarly work, James Murfin has produced a highly readable and perceptive book in which the characters of the men involved, from private to general, come into clear and human focus. The gentleness and patience of Lincoln, the vacillations of McClellan, and the grandeur of Lee -- all unfold before the reader. The battle itself is presented with remarkable clarity; atmosphere and fact, emotions and tactical movements blend together into a harmonious whole. Nothing has escaped the author's research -- from a Maryland woman's reaction to "The Flower of Lee's army" to the intricate maneuvers of both sides during the battle -- it is all here. The book contains eighteen battle maps, organizational tables for both armies, and numerous photographs, including two that have never before been published. Civil War, Nonfiction, War Between the States, War of Rebellion, Union, United States History, American History, Military History, Confederacy, War of Northern Aggression, Americana, U.S.-iana. zslic.

Book First Edition
Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. THE GLEAM OF BAYONETS The Battle of Antietam and Robert E. Lee's Maryland Campaign, September 1862. James V. Murfin. Thomas Yoseloff Publishing, London. 1965 First edition 452pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in very good condition unmarked save for some light dust darkening to the top page edges. The unclipped dust wrapper has some edge wear and creasing but has now been covered in clear removable protective film. The Army of the Potomac, under the command of George McClellan, mounted a series of powerful assaults against Robert E. Lee?s forces near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. The morning assault and vicious Confederate counterattacks swept back and forth through Miller?s Cornfield and the West Woods. Later, towards the centre of the battlefield, Union assaults against the Sunken Road pierced the Confederate centre after a terrible struggle. Late in the day, the third and final major assault by the Union army pushed over a bullet-strewn stone bridge at Antietam Creek. Just as the Federal forces began to collapse the Confederate right, the timely arrival of A.P. Hill?s division from Harpers Ferry helped to drive the Army of the Potomac back once more. The bloodiest single day in American military history ended in a draw, but the Confederate retreat gave Abraham Lincoln the 'victory' he desired before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. Ref P3.
