SIGNED hardcover - Later printing. In a tunnel beneath Grand Central Terminal, Lee Stringer, homeless and a crack addict, had created a nest of cardboard, blankets and books. And then one day, when his pipe was empty, he began to use the pencil he carried around to run through his crack pipe to write instead - and the result is this powerful collection of stories about what it is like to be struggling to survive on the streets. INSCRIBED on the front endpaper. Foreword by Kurt Vonnegut. 239 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is a very rare advance uncorrected proof copy in "As New" condition- unread. This copy is signed by both Lee Stringer and Kurt Vonnegut--who wrote the foreword. Included with this copy is a letter from the editor of Seven Stories Press, Daniel Simon, to to recipient reviewers and editors who received copies-- retelling how Simon was riding a subway in New York City and came upon a copy of "Street News"--which included articles written by an author going by the byline "Homey". Simon was immediately taken by the author's depiction of street life and wonderful storytelling. He signed "Homey" who was Lee Stringer to a book contract in 1995. It took Stringer 3 years to write the book and put himself through a rigorous drug treatment program. The book that evolved was called "Grand Central Winter" and Kurt Vonnegut wrote the foreword in which he compared Stringer to Jack London--a self-educated writer who also was a victim of poverty and addiction. Kurt Vonnegut stated plainly that "This man can write"! Signed copies of this title (softcover or hardcover are scare--as only 5,000 copies were originally printed)--plus the signature on Vonnegut. Signed by Author(s).
