Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 292 pp; portrait. Original cloth. Very Good, without dust jacket. Inscribed: 'To Joseph McInerney/Pete Fanning/January 29 -1929'. 'Every decade or so, someone puts together an anthology of famous San Francisco criminal cases. First, and perhaps still the best, was Police Captain Thomas Duke's 1910 Celebrated Criminal Cases in America. . . . In 1929, Peter Fanning, another San Francisco police officer, published his Great Crimes of the West which also summarized a number of police related stories including murders and other prominent crimes occurred in San Francisco, adding some that took place after Duke published' (San Francisco Homicide Web site). 'Scarce . . . The author has brought together a number of stories on crime and outlaws. Only two chapters fit this book's purpose: the one on Black Bart and the one on the Daltons. Neither is accurate. The author names the participants of the Coffeyville raid as Bob, Gratt, and Emmett Dalton; Tom Evans; 'Texas Jack' Moore; and Ollie Ogee. The last three are incorrect' (Ramon F. Adams, Six-Guns and Saddle Leather: A Bibliography of Books and Pamphlets on Western Outlaws and Gunmen, 694). Signed by Author(s).
