First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First Edition. First printing, octavo size, 528 pp., inscribed by Cecelia Holland. Cecelia Holland (b. 1943) has written, to date, over twenty historical novels which span both the globe and time. In addition, she has authored a multitude of other fictional series, as well as short stories, children's books, and non-fiction. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981-1982. In this work, "Great Maria", her eighth published historical novel, Holland brings her readers to the late eleventh century. Set in Southern Italy, the protagonist struggles "to maintain her independence and identity during the Norman conquest of Sicily" (n.b., quote from the online Cecelia Holland bibliography). Per Wiki, this novel is "often described as Holland's first 'feminist' novel." Note that we have several other volumes of Holland's historical fiction, many of them signed; if you are searching for a particular title, please do let us know. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full natural linen cloth over boards, gilt debossed lettering and small decoration on the front board and spine, red top-stain, inscribed by the author on the title page ("To Larry") in blue ink; octavo size (8 1/2" by 5 3/4"), pagination: [i-viii] [1-3] 4-519 [1]. The dust jacket shows the original price of $8.95, a wrap-around illustration from one of the tapestries in the Metropolitan Museum Cloisters, summary of book on front flap, author picture and bio on the back flap. ___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a light red mark on the bottom edge of the text block (may be a remainder mark, may just be a stray mark), else fine. The dust jacket also near fine, it is not price-clipped, clean, with minor overall edgewear and sunning to the spine. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help.
