Great pictorial history of the Great Northern Railway of James J. Hill, often called "The Empire Builder". James Jerome Hill (September 16, 1838 ? May 29, 1916), was a Canadian-American railroad executive. He was the chief executive officer of a family of lines headed by the Great Northern Railway, which served a substantial area of the Upper Midwest, the northern Great Plains, and Pacific Northwest. Because of the size of this region and the economic dominance exerted by the Hill lines, Hill became known during his lifetime as "The Empire Builder". The Great Northern was the first transcontinental built without public money and just a few land grants, and was one of the few transcontinental railroads not to go bankrupt. Loaded with vintage B&W photographs. Highly recommended for any Railroad fan. ISBN-087564502X. LOC SSM-01.

Ink name of previous owner of the book with date and number written on front free endpaper. DJ is in a plastic sleeve taped over covers. Includes Dedication, Introduction, Acknowledgments, The Early Days, Steam Power, Electrics and the Cascade Tunnels, and Diesels. Profusely illustrated with black and white photographs. The long steel ribbon wound West over plain, desert and mountain into the timbered fastness of the Washington wilderness. The author was an Air Force instructor during World War II and was a railroad enthusiast his entire life. He was a noted collector, photographer, and for a long time he was active in the National Model Railroad Association. Great photographs dramatize the Great Northern story from the days when steam was king, hauling Jim Hill's trains west from Minnesota's lakes to become the country's most northern "empire building" railroad--a line plagued by trouble until electrification came and the 8-mile Cascade Tunnel was completed in 1929. The author spent four years searching and researching for facts and photos about the great Great Northern.
