"The sheer perfection of the writing is very rare in English since the loosening of standards in Nineteenth Century fiction." .reality is again entrance and translucent with the light of a natural glory behind it.what is more remarkable.one gradually comes to realize that it is about this state of being as such that Read is writing. Grey boards a little grubby; gilt titles with green design to spine panel which is frayed at both ends and is detached from back strip on one side only. Some toning to the text block. Front endpaper has tipped in bookplate which looks to be hand drawn. Illustrations by Felix Kelly; very attractive colour plates -full page. New edition of Read's only novel, paired with Felix Kelly's gently surreal illustrations. Written when he lived in Hampstead amidst the 'nest of gentle artists' (including Henry Moore). The story is based on the 12th-century legend of two green children who mysteriously appeared in the English village of Woolpit, speaking an apparently unknown language.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Good plus overall condition. Part of DJ loosely inserted. Colour illustrations by Felix Kelly. 137 pages. Read's only novel.
Condition: Poor. FIRST THUS, SIGNED BY AUTHOR to half title: 'Herbert Read/ 21. iii. 52'. 8vo, pp. [138] + colour plates: sadly, defective a previous owner has excised four plates, including the frontis. Grey cloth with gilt lettering interspersed with green circles to spine. Spine slightly cocked, wear to heel, bruising to top corners. POI to ffep, contents lightly shaken. Else, clean and bright. Though defective, scarce with Read's signature. New edition of Read's only novel, originally published in 1935 by Heinemann, and here fittingly paired with Felix Kelly's gently surreal illustrations. Written when he lived in Hampstead amidst the 'nest of gentle artists' (including Henry Moore) and in the same year as his extended 'Appreciation' of the sculptor appeared, the novel testifies to the critic's broad set of theoretical influences, particularly the psychoanalytic mysticism of Carl Jung. As well as designing dust jackets for authors such as Naomi Jacob and collections like Faber's Best Tales of Terror (1962), the New Zealand-born artist was often commissioned to produce paintings for grand houses in the UK and US, with the most well-know being the murals in the Garden Hall at Castle Howard, North Yorkshire. Read would return the favour and provided an introduction to a slim volume of Kelly's paintings published by Falcon Press in 1946.
