Carlos Fuentes (geboren 1928 in Mexico City) nimmt Bierces Geschichte an diesem Punkt auf und erzählt sie weiter bis zum Tod. Der -alte Gringo- ist nach Mexiko gekommen, um zu sterben. Aber bevor es soweit ist, begegnet er noch einmal dem Leben in Gestalt eines jungen Bürgerkriegsgenerals und einer nordamerikanischen Hauslehrerin. Es geht um Liebe und Tod und darum, wie unterschiedlich Mexikaner und Nordamerikaner damit umgehen. Als der General den alten Mann von hinten erschießt, drohen diplomatische Verwicklungen. Die Leiche wird ausgegraben und noch einmal erschossen, diesmal von vorn, sozusagen regulär - und dann kann die Lehrerin ihn, den sie zu ihrem längst verlorenen Vater erklärt, eingesargt mit über die Grenze nehmen. - Carlos Fuentes Macías (* 11. November 1928 in Panama-Stadt, Panama; 15. Mai 2012 in Mexiko-Stadt, Mexiko war ein mexikanischer Schriftsteller. Leben: Carlos Fuentes' Vater war mexikanischer Diplomat und in den 1930ern u. a. Botschafter in Washington. Fuentes selbst lernte deshalb als Heranwachsender zahlreiche Länder Mittel- und Südamerikas sowie die USA inklusive deren Kultur und Literatur kennen und erhielt eine hochprivilegierte Schulbildung. Bei seinen eigenen ersten literarischen Versuchen stand vor allem unter dem Einfluss von Pablo Neruda. Mit sechzehn Jahren ging Fuentes dauerhaft nach Mexiko und schloss seine höhere Schulausbildung in Mexiko-Stadt ab. Während dieser Zeit arbeitete er an der Zeitschrift Hoy (Heute) mit und erhielt einen ersten Literaturpreis vom Colegio Francés Morelos. Anschließend studierte er Wirtschaftswissenschaften in Genf und Jura an der Nationalen Autonomen Universität in Mexiko-Stadt. Nach dem Studium arbeitete Fuentes zunächst wie sein Vater als Diplomat in Chile und Argentinien. Ab 1959 betätigte er sich ausschließlich als Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor. Fuentes lebte in den 1960ern in Paris, Venedig, London und Mexiko-Stadt. In den 1970ern arbeitete er am Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. Außerdem vertrat er von 1976 bis 1977 sein Land als Botschafter in Frankreich, gab den Posten jedoch wieder auf, als Ex-Präsident Gustavo Díaz Ordaz zum Botschafter Mexikos in Spanien ernannt wurde. Seit 1990 lebte Fuentes in Europa, vor allem in London, sowie zeitweise in den USA, wo er einen Lehrauftrag an der Harvard University erhielt. Carlos Fuentes starb 2012 und wurde auf dem Cimetière Montparnasse in Paris beigesetzt, wo auch seine Kinder beerdigt sind. Seinem Sohn Carlos Fuentes Lemus (19731999) ist der Roman Das Gläserne Siegel gewidmet. Werke: Fuentes beschäftigt sich in seinen Erzählungen, Essays und Romanen mit dem Alltag und der Geschichte Mexikos. Als ein wichtiger Vertreter der mexikanischen Gegenwartsliteratur weist er mit verschiedenen stilistischen Mitteln auf die Problematik des mexikanischen Lebens hin. Später widmete er sich in seinen Romanen auch dem Verhältnis zwischen Europa und Amerika und nahm auch Stellung zum Nord-Süd-Konflikt. Seine ersten Erzählungen veröffentlichte er 1954 in dem Band Verhüllte Tage, das zu einem Bestseller im Heimatland wurde. Das galt auch für seinen ersten Roman Landschaft in klarem Licht, der als erster ein umfassenderes Bild des modernen Mexiko-Stadt zeichnete. Bald leitete er Zeitschriften wie Revista Mexicana de Literatura und El Espectador. Als eines seiner wichtigsten und interessantesten Werke kann der Roman Terra Nostra betrachtet werden, in dem er in kunstvoller Montage das Mexiko der Gegenwart mit der mexikanischen Kolonisationsgeschichte verwebt. Christoph, Ungeborn vermittelte eine Beschreibung des Mexikos der 80er- und 90er-Jahre. Der Roman Der alte Gringo.
