Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. THE GROTESQUE IN PHOTOGRAPHY, Allan D. Coleman, softcover, richly illustrated with many B/W photographs, 1977. BOOK CONDITION: Good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate but the signature of a prior owner is written on the half-title page. Not a library book or remainder. The top edge is slightly foxed. The red illustrated wraps are in good condition (very slight edge crinkling, large crease in lower righthand corner of front). 11 ½ x 8 ½, 208 pages, 28 ounces XX [From the back cover] Much of the best and most exciting contemporary photography is grotesque - meaning odd, unnatural, fantastic, startling, or bizarre in content. It is the work of photographers at the leading edge of a creative trend as revolutionary for photography as Impressionism was for the art of painting. This book is a first collection of their extraordinary and important pictures. Grotesque photography has three forms of expression. Reality, Constructed Reality, and Unreality. Reality is the actual grotesquery of life that has fascinated photographers - and viewers - since the camera was invented. Reality ranges from pictures of Civil War casualties and the shot-up corpses of Western badmen, through Weegee's tabloid pix of murder in the streets, to Peter Hujar's present-day portraits from the catacombs. Constructed Reality is a creative vision - or whim in which models, locations, costumes, and props are selected and composed by the photographer. The result may be tableaux (Les Krims), dreamlike, story-telling sequences (Duane Michals), interpretive portraits (Ellen Carey). Allusions may be sexual, parodistic, or figure-it-out-for-yourself. Unreality depicts situations or events which never happened They are creations dependent on techniques such as photomontage (Adal, for instance), photocollage (Allen Dutton), multiple printing (Jerry Uelsmann), solarization (Todd Walker), manipulation of photographic materials (Lucas Samaras), or combinations thereof. All of these photographers may work in any and all of these forms. They are fiercely individual and their product is spectacular. XX A. D. Coleman, widely known writer, critic, and teacher, is an informed and sympathetic observer of grotesque photography and has been studying its historical background under a foundation grant.
