Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A tribute to that most despised public servant, the executioner, and to the author's 'art'. In his treatise on judicial killing, whether it is by electrocution, hanging or gassing, he writes with deceptive levity about botched executions, the bloodlust of witnesses, innocent victims and a legal system that demands retribution. The result is a stunning satire of capital punishment, a polemic that reveals the hypocrisy and self-delusion inherent in a society that demands 'an eye for an eye' yet strives to make state-sponsored killing humane. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

First Edition
Black Cloth. Condition: VG. No Jacket. 'Definitive edition' 1st thus?. 180 pp., internally clean, tight & unmarked, very faint browned strips to endpapers offset from now absent jacket; covers clean & unworn. The final edition of this classic anti-capital punishment satire, densely but ironically factual, first published in 1928 as 'A Handbook on Hanging', which went through further editions in 1938 and 1948. Details verso t.p. are slightly ambiguous since they say 'This, the Definitive Edition', was first published in 1954 under the title of 'A New Handbook of Hanging' ' which may be taken as implying it to be a reprint, but is I think just meant as a statement of fact. The author was a Barrister. The title page is actually very entertaining with a nine-line sub-title beginning 'Being a short Introduction to the fine Art of Execution, containing much useful Information on Neck-breaking, Throttling, Strangling, Asphyxiation .' plus, above the imprint, 'All very Proper to be read and kept in every Family'. I am told it played a significant role in the abolition of capital punishment in Britain, but cannot confirm this. Size: 12.5 Cm x 18.5 Cm.
