First Edition
Sturdily bound in the publisher s coffee colored cloth stamped brightly in gold letters with a pictorial scene of Civil War soldiers on the front boards. The gold lettering on the spine is lightly dulled but the drawing of the solder drinking coffee in his open tent is bright and evocative. A substantial volume printed on heavy stock and measuring 9" x 6.25". In superb condition, a near-fine copy with a touch of rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine ends. A collector s copy. Most histories of the Civil War focus on battles and top brass. Hardtack and Coffee is one of the few to give a vivid, detailed picture of what ordinary soldiers endured every day in camp, on the march, at the edge of a booming, smoking hell. John D. Billings of Massachusetts enlisted in the Army of the Potomac and survived the conditions he recorded. The authenticity of his book is heightened by the many drawings that a comrade, Charles W. Reed, made in the field. With chapters on: Enlisting, Life in tents and log huts, Jonahs and beats, Offences and pun ishments, raw recruits, goraging.wagon trains, the army mule, etc. First edition with matching dates of 1887 on the title and copyright pages.
