Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. WAR IS HEAVEN! By D. Keith Mano. Doublcday 1970 hardcover Review from the Baytown Sun: "WAR IS HEAVEN! By D. Keith Mano. Doublcday. $5.95. This vivid tale of guerrilla warfare is set in the imaginary latin American country of Camaguay, a banana dictatorship which is trying to suppress a revolt by Communist-backed forces. The novel is a story of a government patrol of a few dozen men travelling through the jungle. Many of them are Camaguayans, but a few are American military "advisers." The central figure is Sgt. Clarence Hook, a charismatic, determinated man who says he hates war but feels he must fight for the only two things he cherishes, his religion and his liberty. He is the patrol's actual leader, although the Camaguayans nominally are under a lieutenant of their own (he is psychotic) and the Americans have a lieutenant who does nothing in the way of command. Both lieutenants hate the sergeant. The patrol has lost its medical corpsman, so it has borrowed one from a U.S. Navy vessel, a Negro named Andrew Jones, who has no liking for war in any form, much less guerrilla combat. It is Jones who frequently challenges Hook's talk of religion and the necessity of war- Tare. The patrol's trip turns into a nightmare of jungle danger, booby traps, ambushes, cruelty and treachery. Mano's narrative powers are considerable. He has created a forceful drama of desperate men living in the midst of death, and through these desperate men he has portrayed the viciousness of war in unmistakable fashion." very good, minor cloth wear, foxing spots inside covers at fold, clean and tight.
