Smith (born 1934, in West Point, N.Y.) is a retired United States Air Force major general. He is a teacher, author and TV and radio commentator. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA) following high school. Smith played intercollegiate lacrosse and was named as a member of the second team All American lacrosse team. Smith graduated from West Point in 1956. Smith went on to earn his Ph.D. in International Relations from Columbia University. Smith flew 180 combat missions over Laos and North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He has served as branch chief, division chief, and Joint Chiefs of Staff planner. He commanded the F-15 equipped 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, served as the top Air Force Planner and was commandant of the National War College. The story of a true American hero who earned both the Carnegie Medal and the Medal of Honor. As an undergraduate at Clemson he earned the Carnegie Medal for saving two women caught in a storm off the coast of South Carolina. Sixteen years later, as a Marine Lieutenant Colonel he went behind enemy lines to save four wounded Marines. For his extraordinary valor and leadership in combat he earned the Medal of Honor. A Marine patrol had inadvertently moved behind enemy lines, surrounded on three sides by Japanese forces, where they came under small arms fire from a concealed position. One of the Marines was killed instantly, and four of the remaining five Marines sustained injuries from the attack. One of the injured Marines, Cpl. Frank Pokrop, later recalled, "with no protection and heavy fire coming at us from a few feet away and dusk approaching, we were certain to be killed. All of a sudden Col. Dyess broke through on the right, braving the very heavy fire, and got all of us out of there.".
