Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Sutton Elbert Griggs (June 19, 1872 - January 2, 1933) was an African-American author, Baptist minister, and social activist. He is best known for his novel Imperium in Imperio, a utopian work that envisions a separate African-American state within the United States. Griggs was a prolific author, writing more than thirty books and pamphlets in his lifetime and selling them door-to-door or at the revival meetings at which he preached. His first novel, Imperium in Imperio, published in 1899, is his most famous. In 1901, Griggs founded the Orion Publishing Company to sell books to the African American market. None of his four subsequent novels achieved the success of Imperium in Imperio, but he produced a steady stream of social and religious tracts, as well as an autobiography. Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 3rd Edition. Third edition. Cover a bit rubbed: Most of fragile detailing has flaked off, but gilt text and pasted-on picture still clear; spine ends show wear; 1 4" hole near base of spine; binding tight; no foxing; hinges slightly cracked; p/o signatures on front endpaper; 2" stain at front hinge. A not-bad-at-all, perfectly readable copy of Griggs' fourth novel, written as a response to Thomas Dixon's white-supremacist best-seller "The Leopard's Spots." A Baptist pastor, Griggs founded the Orion Publishing Co. and sold books at revival meetings; few of the copies have survived. "The Hindered Hand" remains a significant work of early 20th-century black political literature. Uncommon. 333 pages + 5 pages of publisher's ads.
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Robert E[ugene] Bell (illustrator). 3rd ed. revised. 15 illustrations (by Robert E[ugene] Bell, 333p. plus 4p. publisher's adverts. Maroon cloth. Centered black & white illustration, also by Bell, mounted on lower portion of front cover. 19 cm. Covers rather worn -- decorative white ruled-lines on front cover about half gone; ends of backstrip and other extremities worn. Splitting along endpapers at hinge have been visibly reglued. Former owner's name stamp ("W. Winfree Hughes" of Baltimore) on both endpapers. No Jacket. In this Third (and final) edition, Griggs added an essay on "The Leopard Spots," an infamously racist novel by Thomas Dixon. In the earlier editions, Dixon's book is discussed in less detail by two characters in the novel. This third edition greatly outsold the two earlier editions and almost all copies which turn up are Third editions.
