Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Paris, octavo, [iv], 354 p. ***CONTENT: First published in German, this is the scarce French edition of this celebrated treatise on Gypsy origins, customs and practices. Chapters include details on their history and distribution, manners and customs, physical and societal characteristics, their education, religious practices, domestic life, manner of dress, arts and crafts, and more. Much attention focuses on the Gypsy language, and the volume includes a trilingual glossary of Romany, Hindi, and French. ***PROVENANCE: On the half-title page is the full inked signature of Albert Gallatin (1761-1849), the celebrated American statesman, diplomat, ethnologist, and linguist. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, he is frequently described as "America's Swiss Founding Father". Gallatin was a leading figure in the foundational years of the United States, helping to shape our financial system and foreign policy. He served in both chambers of Congress, and later, as Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Jefferson and Madison. A gifted foreign diplomat, Gallatin helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. Since he spoke French as a first language, and given his interest in linguistics, it is not surprising to see Gallatin's signature on this volume! I have compared this signature with other examples (provided) and find it to be genuine. ***CONDITION: This copy is internally complete and near Fine, and bound in contemporary tree-calf. The covers show wear but are sound; backstrip lacking. Hinges strong, sewing and binding firm. The text pages are near pristine: fresh, clean, crisp, and bright, with only the very occasional spot of foxing. No stains. This is a very important association copy. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
