Bound in contemporary gilt decorated full calf leather with five raised bands to a gilt decorated spine, marbled end papers and gilt page edges. Latin and Arabic text, old library binding for the Guildhall Library, London, worn and spine ends chipped. Library stamps to many pages. "The History of Joseph the Carpenter" is a compilation of traditions concerning Mary, and the holy family. It is believed to originate from the Byzantine Egypt in Greek language in the late 6th century or early 7th century, and only survived in the Arabic language translation. This copy has a Latin translation and comments by Georg Wallin (1686-1760), a Swedish scholar, Bishop and antiquarian. He went on a tour to Germany, Holland and England in 1708-1710 and to France in 1720-1723. University librarian at Uppsala, professor of theology 1726, superintendent at Visby in 1735, in 1744 bishop of Gothenburg. Correspondent of Linnaeus. Provenance: Guildhall Library London, Liverpool Library, British Museum stamps to the pages. Approximately 8 ¾ inches tall.
