Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), 400 pp, 9 fold-out maps, notes, Appendixes. Fine in a Fine dust jacket with envelope of enclosed maps. From Publisher: Widely regarded as the best eyewitness account of the Battle of New Orleans, Arsène LaCarrière Latour's Historical Memoir records first-hand the dramatic events of the climactic military campaign of the War of 1812. This revised and expanded edition includes a substantial new biographical introduction based on a group of manuscripts relating to the battle recently acquired from Latour's descendants in France. Only months after the battle ended, Latour, who was General Andrew Jackson's principal army engineer, began interviewing witnesses and key participants in order to create a comprehensive record based on first-hand accounts. The work's most significant value derives from these accounts--of numerous individuals who participated in a crucial moment in the history of the United States-- reproduced in the book's appendix. As the first full-length treatment of the New Orleans campaign, the book also offers perceptive analysis of battle preparations, terrain, and strategy by the man who designed many of the American defenses. This new edition also includes nine three-color foldout maps illustrating the course of the battle. Latour characterized it as a conflict "which preserved our country from conquest and desolation." As a key figure in the conflict who knew many of the other main actors and personally collected their reports and observations, Latour provides a record which will never be replaced. Atlas in modern plain boards. Internally very good. 8 uncolored maps (7 folding) depicting operations in Louisiana and Florida at the end of the War of 1812. Clark (Old South) II 158: "This Historical Memoir is a detailed and precise narrative of the 1814-15 campaign from the first arrival of British forces on the Louisiana coast until their complete evacuation. First Edition
First edition, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xx, 264, cxc; plus a separately bound atlas containing 8 hand-colored maps, 7 folding (1 with a 5" x 3" loss at one corner, but neatly inlayed and several others with short splits at the folds); frontispiece portrait of Andrew Jackson, apparently not present in all copies; 20th-century green three-quarter morocco over marbled boards; text a bit spotted and foxed, but overall generally very good. One of the most important books on the War of 1812. "Major Latour's account of the military events is minute and interesting, and the appendix contains an invaluable collection of state papers" (Sabin). "Chief authority, well-documented, on these operations" (Howes). The eight maps (Sabin states that there are only seven) consist of battle plans and "A General Map of the Seat of War in Louisiana and West Florida," executed by Major Latour in his capacity as engineer. Streeter describes the maps and plans (which are sometimes found bound in a separate atlas) as "invaluable," and Clark calls the book "a detailed and precise narrative of the 1814-15 campaign from the first arrival of British forces on the Louisiana coast until their complete evacuation." Sabin 39214. Clark II:158. Streeter 1075. Howes L124; American Imprints 38034-5.

Atlas volume, 8vo., (8 4/8 x 5 2/8 inches). Title-page. 8 fine engraved maps with original hand-color, including seven folding (some short tears to gutters, some repairs). Original drab paper boards (backstrip worn, with remains of original printed paper label, soiled). Modern green cloth clamshell box. Provenance: Ownership inscription of M.J. Cantine on the title-page of the Atlas volume. First edition. "This is the classic account of the campaign in the War of 1812 which culminated in the battle of New Orleans. The appendix contains copies of documents relating to the campaign, and the atlas with its plates and maps is invaluable. Theodore Roosevelt in his Naval War of 1812, p. 483 note, remarks, "Latour (who was General Jackson's chief engineer) is the only trustworthy contemporary American historian of this war, and even he at times absurdly exaggerates the British forces and loss" (Streeter). The maps constitute the most valuable cartographic record of the war on the Gulf Coast, they include a general map of the seat of war in Louisiana and Florida, movements of Jackson's troops, attacks on both British and American fortifications including at Mobile Point and in and around New Orleans and the Mississippi. Howes, L124; Sabin 39214; Streeter 1075.
