Despite its relative brevity, and perhaps for that very reason, Professor Jose? Canton has managed to catch, in flight, that which is transient and also imperishable in it, in these pages bound to become classic. Here is everything that is inescapable, all that which is indispensable for a smooth, uninterrupted journey along the Cuban historic process. There will be facts and events missing here and there, passages that some might consider important but which are not fundamental in the course of the story that is so passionately told that history seems to unfold. For not all that is important demands recording, as it would turn the story into an encyclopedia, and one of the purposes of this book is to make Cuban history more easily available to millions of people, both abroad and in this country. In writing about history there are several approaches. There is the study of periods and epochs, of developments that are unique in their political, social, or military content, and also the review of that which encompasses the global events, like the roots and movements of whole populations in their shaping of nations and countries. The biographies of outstanding individuals generally carry descriptions of the prevailing situation during their life and times. Regardless of whether they were illustrious and benevolent, or sinister and backwards, they are all approached from the point of view of their own pesonalities.
