ABOUT THIS BOOK: This book is a sequel to A history of experimental psychology. It brings the history of the senses up to about 1930. The author does not trust his own perspective for events of the last decade. The first 2 chapters are introductory and consider general problems. The next 6 cover vision, including depth perception. 3 chapters are devoted to audition, and 1 each is given to smell and taste, touch, organic sensibility, and the perception of time and movement. A final chapter analyzes some of the factors that have inhibited and facilitated scientific progress. There is an index of names and one of subjects. References and comments follow each chapter and constitute a substantial portion of the book.(American Psychological Association).

Olive Cloth. Condition: VG. 2nd Ed.(1st-1929). f/piece (Wundt portrait relief sculpture)+xix+777, maps on endpapers; bookseller's labe; bottom fr.pastedown, sm.hole in half-title which might be a paper fault, otherwise an excellent copy, red text panels on sp.sl.faded, a few tiny white flecks, otherwise covers clean & virtually unworn. Although now widely considered obsolete in its approach Boring's text remains invaluable for reference purposes and is subtler than most traditional histories of its kind. This appears to be the 1st issue of the 1950 2nd ed. from code verso t.p. ('530' - signifying March 1950 I believe). Size: 14.5 Cm x 21.5 Cm.
Boring's strongly positivist view of psychology as a science made a large imprint on Harvard's psychology department. Over the course of his long career Boring never wavered from his emphasis on experimental psychology as the only legitimately scientific way of probing the relationship between the environment and human behavior. This work is still reprinted. This is the second edition. l Prentice-Hall. Englewood Cliffs 1957. Cl. 778 pp. Very good condition.
