Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. SUBTITLED: With the Armies of the Ohio and Cumberland, under Generals Morgan, Rosecrans, Thomas, Stanley, and Wilson, 1862-1865. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 335 pgs, plates including illustrations, maps, portraits, errata page. Unit roster 269-311. First edition. Original light blue cloth with gilt titled spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light soiling to covers and spine, spine ends and edge with light rubbing; else covers bright. Interior has contemporary inked name, J.N. Jones, on front free endpaper; else pages are clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Author was a member of Co. C. The 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment served in the Union Army. It was also known as 1st East Tennessee Cavalry and originally consisted of the mounting of the 4th Tennessee Infantry. Staunchly pro-Union young men escaped from Confederate-occupied East Tennessee in droves to muster up and fill numerous regiments for the North. One of the most famous units was the First Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. Led by Colonel James P. Brownlow, the regiment participated in more than 50 battles and skirmishes, including the East Tennessee campaign, the Atlanta campaign, the Battle of Franklin, the Battle of Nashville, and Brownlow s infamous naked charge. Relative to the inked J.N. JONES name, the Jones families were well represented in at least 6 companies. One, James Jones, Jr of Co. A was "killed by a bushwhacker", date unknown. His serving father, also in Co. A, James Jones, Sr survived the war. There were numerous Joneses in Co. H, including another James Jones. This book may (likely) have a family connection to the regiment. Here in excellent condition is a scare Tennessee (Union) regimental history. DORN II #962; NEVINS I pg. 67: A unique and quite revealing unit study of a Unionist regiment from Tennessee; exceedingly scarce. MULLINS/REED pg 59.
