Small folio, 307x198mm, engraved frontispiece portrait, xii, [4-subscribers], 422; engraved frontispiece portrait, [viii], 459; engraved frontispiece portrait, [x], 445, [1], [33-index] pp. Contemporary brown full panelled calf, five raised bands, gilt on black lettering pieces, all edges tinted. Professionally recased retaining the endpapers, fore-edges of the frontispieces of Vols. I and III replaced with old paper (not affecting the engraved image), old signatures of William Hildebrand and E. J. Gunther otherwise a VG attractive set. First Dublin edition. The title continues: begun in the year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration.

".With The true State and Condition of that Kingdom before the Year 1640; and the most material Passages and Actions which since that Time have contributed to the Calamities it hath undergone." Clarendon, 1609-1674, "Late Lord High-Chancellor of England, Privy-Counsellor in the Reigns of King Charles the First and the Second." (1609-1674) is one of the most important and polarizing figures of his era. According to the publisher note, this one-volume edition printed in Ireland is "more correct of that of London." This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Irish Edition. Full leather binding, decoratively stamped in black on both covers. Five raised bands on the spine, with a black label titled in gilt. Clean text; 217 pages, with a one-page advert from the publishers in the rear. Very clear and readable, with occasional spotting. Faint marbled edges; the front endpapers have been removed. There is an armorial bookplate on the front paste-down; presumed to be Alexander Beresford Hope (1820-1857), with three pencil notations. Bumped and rubbed; chip to foot of spine; upper spine is rubbed, with a small split at the corner. Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repair or restoration. And well worth the effort. First Irish Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

"Vindication Page" after front flyleaf states that this edition is "more complete" than the London edition. Previous owner's signature, dated 1800, in faded ink to verso of title page. Library ink stamp ("Dominican Fathers St. Antonius' Priory") to verso of Vindication page, title page, and pages 63, 79, 103, and 151. Tight, clean copy. ESTC T53950. The Earl of Clarendon's account of the events in Ireland after the death of Charles 1, the supplement to his famous History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (1702-04).

This is the copy that was owned by Irish writer Denis Johnston (b. 1901-d. 1984). Johnston was a protege of William Butler Yeats and George Bernard Shaw and was a friend of Sean O'Casey. He was the author of 11 plays and four works of non-fiction IThis copy contains his bookplate and signature on front pastedown, extensive notes on front pastedown, and occasional marginal notes, usually caustic in nature about the English, in pencil on the margins of volume 1.
