Billings, A Member of the Company, author of "Hard Tack and Coffee". BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 496 pgs, frontis portrait and other illustrations including 2 maps and 2 portrait plates. Unit roster 470-477. Original red cloth with gilt titled and decorated covers and spines, embossed covers. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing and wear to edges and corners, and lower spine end. Front cover gilt bright. Interior is clean and tight. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: "One of the better New England unit histories, this work relies on a wartime diary and a collection of nearly 300 letters written by Billings during the war. Such a solid foundation provides an excellent story of service with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia and Maryland from the late August 1862 through the end of the war. The author describes much about soldier life in the battery, the Southern people and the countryside in war, ahed the officers of the unit. He also speculates about commanders on both sides. The account is well written and a worthy companion to his classic Hardtack and Coffee." (Eicher 1066). REFERENCES: DORN MASS 31; COULTER 33: "As a travel account, this work is better than the majority of regimental histories. The author gives considerable attention to the country through which he marched, including in his descriptions the state of agriculture, the condition in which he found the old Virginia mansions, the attitude of he people toward Federal soldiers, and the treatment union soldiers meted out to the property of Confederates. He gives an extensive description of the Sulphur Springs resort near Warrenton. His military service and hence his travels lay entirely in Virginia." ; NEVINS I pg 60: "Among the top dozen unit histories pertaining to the Civil War; Billings used his own diary, some 300 letters, and a comrade's manuscript as a basis for this book." MULLINS/REED 8:"A superior unit history"; EICHER 1066.
