First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition. 16mo; viii, 227 pages, pictorial brown cloth, chipped fore-edge leaf 61/62, rear cover a bit crinkled (from being carried in a saddle bag?). Frontispiece by George Varian, who specialized in the Indian/Western genre. Schultz moved to Montana in the 1870s. He met and traveled with a trapper and Indian trader, Thomas Fox, "Brave, honest old Ah-ta-to-yi (The Fox), as the Blackfeet and frontiers-men loved to call him. After his burial, Chief Pitamaka said of Fox, "Although of white skin, the man who lies there was my brother." Here is the chronologically first portion of Thomas Fox's life in the West as recollected by and as told to Schultz. Fox's Uncle Wesley trapped for the American Fur Co. and Pierre Chouteau. 'In 1856, when Thomas was thirteen, his parents died of smallpox, and he left St. Louis for the Missouri wilderness to live with his fur-trading uncle. He befriended a Blackfoot boy named Pitamakan and was allowed to go hunting with him and his band. One day, when they were trapping beaver, Thomas and Pitamakan veered off into Kootenay territory and were surprised by hostile Kootenays, who stole their horses, furs, and survival gear and left them with just the clothes on their backs . The detailed explanations of hunting techniques, skinning and tanning hides, constructing shelter, and so on seem like a how-to on wilderness survival". - Copyright 1996 the Manitoba Library Association. "I love both survival tales and mountain men tales, . I was thoroughly engrossed even though I am an old lady". - Lady Calico.
