Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Fourth Printing. Not bad for a first novel, more to come, printings that is. Flat-signed by the author on the title page. From the rear of the jacket (in case you can't make it out in the photo): "In The Invisible Circus, Jennifer Egan has written a splendid novel of depth and elegance. She writes sentences that take your breath away. If there were justice in this world, no one would be allowed to write a first novel of such beauty and accomplishment."-- Pat Conroy, and "A startling book, full of unexpected words and sentences. And ideas. And events. Jennifer Egan is a highly original, unusually intelligent writer."-- Alice Adams. The covers of the book aren't highly unusual or intelligent, but they are in very good shape. As you can see, they are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. There is a bit of the usual crinkling at the spine ends. The page edges are very clean. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and endpapers are a really nice looking, I think it's turquoise, an unusual color. There is one small tan spot on the top edge of the rear inside cover, just above where the turquoise paper ends. The pages are exceptionally clean. They are also bright. I've scrolled through them a good number of times without finding any instances of soiling. That includes the endpapers and inside covers. I'm also not finding any instances of creasing, no turned-down corners are placeholder creases. There aren't any markings. There aren't any attachments. In the author's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It looks very good. There are no tears. No creasing. The flaps are in excellent condition the jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all it will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. 'In Jennifer Egan's highly acclaimed first novel, set in 1978, the political drama and familial tensions of the 1960s form a backdrop for the world of Phoebe O'Connor, age eighteen. Phoebe is obsessed with the memory and death of her sister Faith, a beautiful idealistic hippie who died in Italy in 1970. In order to find out the truth about Faith's life and death, Phoebe retraces her steps from San Francisco across Europe, a quest which yields both complex and disturbing revelations about family, love, and Faith's lost generation. This spellbinding novel introduced Egan's remarkable ability to tie suspense with deeply insightful characters and the nuances of emotion.'. Signed by Author(s).

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition. Signed by author without inscription. A very nice copy. 1995 Hard Cover. 338 pp. Author's first book. Phoebe O'Connor, eighteen in the summer of 1978, is too young to have partaken of the riotous carnival of the sixties, but old enough to feel the anxiety of its influence. Living in San Francisco with her widowed mother, Phoebe drifts along the edges of her life, obsessed by the memory of her charismatic older sister, Faith, a true flower child who died mysteriously in Italy eight years before. Believing that her sister's fatal journey holds the key to her own transformation, Phoebe bolts to Europe. Phoebe follows the itinerary Faith had spelled out in postcards home - London, Amsterdam, Paris - but the millennial excitement of Faith's Europe has vanished, and Phoebe finds herself vulnerable and isolated. Finally she reaches Italy and traces her sister's last steps. But the truth Phoebe discovers is darker and more complicated than anything she has imagined, and finally she must face the human price her sister paid for taking her quest for personal liberation to the very edge. Only by dispelling the ghosts of a romanticized past does Phoebe come into full possession of her world. Jennifer Egan portrays this fundamental passage with a mastery of riveting narrative extraordinary in a first novel. As it confronts the ambiguous legacy of the sixties, The Invisible Circus also beautifully and powerfully describes a journey essential to all of us. Signed by author.
