Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. An attractive first edition (referencing Copac) of James Orrock by Byron Webber. With 176 illustrations and 27 plates, collated compete. Number 494 of a limited press of 500. James Orrock RI (1829-1913) was a prominent Scottish collector of art and oriental ceramics, illustrator, and landscape watercolourist. This publication goes into extreme detail with the history of his life. It examines the influences and encounters that have shaped Orrock's work, the evolution of his work, and his rise to the prestigious status held upon his death. Orrock was a noted member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), one of the societies in the Federation of British Artists based in the Mall Galleries, London. The RI, which rivalled the Royal Watercolour Society, challenged the Royal Academy's refusal to accept the medium of watercolours as appropriate for serious art. Orrock is thought to be the main source of late nineteenth-century forgeries, especially the works of John Constable. Complete in two volumes. In a cloth binding with gilt detail. Externally, smart with handling marks. Slight fading to spine. Bumping to spine and corners. Contemporary ink annotation to front free-endpaper of both. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with spotting to first and last of both, heavier to vol I. Very Good. book.
