First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Cecil Beaton (illustrator). First Edition. Japanese was written (and no doubt photographed and illustrated) by Cecil Beaton. The book was published by The John Day Company in 1959 and appears to be a First Edition though it's not stated as such. It's a library copy that spent its years in the Memorial Room, and was perused but never checked out. The book has no dust jacket and is in very good condition but for some library markings. The book is 8 3/4" by 11 1/4" and has 40 pages of text and black & white illustrations, then 134 glossy pages of some very unique black-and-white photographs . . . many of which are portraits, and several of which fold out. It's certainly a neat look at an older Japan and its traditions. Thank you!.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. BEATON, Cecil [133] pp. The John Day Company 1959 11 1/4" x 8 3/4" Cecil Beaton brings all his skills to bear in this charming tribute to Japan, it's customs, people and landscape. His photographs are accompanied by calligraphic drawings and his usual witty and insightful musings. '.Cecil Beaton's camera seems to be held by Japanese hands as he captures lakes and mountains, fabulous blossoming trees, geisha girls and Kabuki dancers, shrines, shop fronts, tea ceremonies, Noh drama or puppet play, cinema sandwichmen or contemporary Japanese writers. His word pictures are no less vivid in circumscribing the life of a people whose language he admittedly does not speak, but whose heart he knows on most intimate aesthetic terms. Here, at long last is the real Japan in photographs and text that will be appreciated for insights as shrewd as any Westerner can hope to have. This book is a rare event.'.
