Pamphlet. Condition: Fair. 5-1/2 x 7" stapled wraps printed in red and black, with loop-cord attached at the spine head. [34] pages. Upper wrap starting to detach, with short tears at the spine and tiny chips out at the corners, pages lightly age-toned. "Published for the 91st Year," the Almanac of course promoted the good doctor's various cures, but also differentiates itself from the masses with features such as guides to fortune-telling via tea leaves and planting by moon phase, and tips for gardening and pruning.

Paperback. Condition: Fair. 4 issues (1913-15-16-17) of Jayne's medical almanac, claiming to the the 70th-74th year of publication. Chipped wraps as issued, some pages and wraps loose. These are not in good condition, but are a period piece and cultural testament of the patent medicine era. 1917 issue is in Norwegian, titled "sundheds veiviser" (health wizard). Dr. David Jaynes was indeed a patent medicine "wizard", descended from a line of clergymen, he created the manufacturing entity - Dr. Jayne's Family Medicines in Philadelphia, PA (US) in the 1820s initially in New Jersey & in the 1850s in Philadelphia. Dr. Jayne's Expectorant contained: Ipecac, opium, and digitalis were evidently the staple ingredients of his tonics.

Issues included in this lot: 1877 (x2) 1885, 1888, 1900, & 1905. Lot is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Lot is not new or in "new" condition. Bindings well age worn, paper now acidified and often brittle, all covers detached with spines split, edge chipping, etc. Please know the paper is brittle, the almanacs are nice looking but must be handled with care. Still attractive on the shelf. The lot displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive. Please review photos for more detail showing how this lot survives. The asking price reflects the condition based on our examination and 35+ years full time exposure to antiquarian books, maps and printed ephemera of all types and genres.
