Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Original binding with a color pictorial dust jacket which show light edge wear. Frontis., illus., introduction, notes, biblio., index, 154p. Former owner's signature. DATED SIGNED COPY BY THE AUTHOR. Dabney's answer to Fawn M. Brodie's Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History and Barbara Chase-Riboud's Sally Hemings. The question as to whether or not Jefferson had a relationship with one of his slaves has largely been answered. In 1981 the question was, however, unanswered. Dabney's rebuttal still makes for very interesting reading and deserves a place beside those who maintain Jefferson's association with Sally Hemings. Signed by Author(s).

"In 1802 a revenge~seeking scandal~monger named James T. Callender charged that Thomas Jefferson, president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence, had taken a lightskinned slave named Sally Hemings as his mistress, and that this relationship resulted in five children. Later it was alleged that one of these children, a daughter, was sold into prostitution at the New Orleans slave market with Jefferson's knowledge and consent. Since then, Callender's charges have surfaced periodically, only to be deflated by scholars. Now, with the publication of two widely distributed books~Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History, by Fawn M. Brodie, and Sally Hemings, a novel by Barbara Chase~Riboud ~ these allegations have become prominent once again. Although supreme doubt, if not outright disbelief, was expressed in scholarly publications, the mass media in general praised the books. The history was a selection of the Book~of~the Month Club and the novel was a Literary Guild choice. In The Jefferson Scandals: A Rebuttal, Virginius Dabney, former editor of the Richmond Times~Dispatch, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his courageous editorials, and author of several highly praised historical works, presents his inquiry into the various allegations. In view of Jefferson's great achievements, the charges against him may seem inconsequential. Considering, however, their widespread publicity and their acceptance by a press and public more captivated by scandal than by fact, these charges seem worthy of investigation. ".
