Softcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Very few people know that Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important but also his best work. He spent twelve years in research and many months in France doing archival work and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written by both sides, the French and the English. Because of Mark Twain's antipathy to institutional religion, one might expect an anti-Catholic bias toward Joan or at least toward the bishops and theologians who condemned her. Instead one finds a remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country's greatest storytellers. The very fact that Mark Twain wrote this book and wrote it the way he did is a powerful testimony to the attractive power of the Catholic Church's saints. This is a book that really will inform and inspire.

First Edition; First Printing. xiv, 461, (2) ads pages; Contents clean and secure in original red cloth with decorative stamping in gilt and white depicting Joan's sword and shield on the front boards and in outline at the spine; short area of color loss at spine edge of front board (reader's thumb perhaps), lightly rubbed at spine. First edition, First Issue with 1896 date on the title page as well as on the copyright page; Ads on p. 463 have appropriate listings for first and fourth items, including "Vols III and IV, Just Ready" Illustrations by F. V. Dumond. The novel is presented as a translation by "Jean Francois Alden" of memoirs by Sieur Louis de Conte, a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc's page Louis de Contes. He has the same initials as Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Mark Twain's real name. The novel is divided into three sections according to Joan of Arc's development: a youth in Domrémy, a commander of the army of Charles VII of France, and a defendant at trial in Rouen. They are entitled "In Domremy", "In Court and Camp", and "Trial and Martyrdom". The novel was first published as a serialization in Harper's Magazine beginning in April 1895. Aware of his reputation as a comic writer, Twain asked that the installments appear anonymously so readers would treat it seriously. Regardless, his authorship soon became known, and Harper and Brothers published the book edition with his name in May 1896; though in this first issue, his name appears on the spine, but not the title page. Many events in the novel are fictionalized; however, the main events in the life of Joan are rendered faithfully.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. 1919 Mark TWAIN 1st ed Saint Joan of Arc Personal Recollections Howard Pyle ART "I like 'Joan of Arc' best of all my books; and it is the best." Mark Twain Until the end of the 18th-century, the story of Joan of Arc was merely a legend, and little was written in histories about her life. She is considered a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Joan of Arc has been a popular figure in cultural history since the time of her death, and many famous writers, filmmakers and composers have created works about her. One of the most famous and popular accounts of Joan of Arc was Mark Twain's final novel 'Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc'. Twain wrote this novel as a translation of the memoirs of a fictional character Louis de Conte. The memoirs themselves describe Joan of Arc's early life, her trial, and eventual martyrdom by burning. Twain himself regarded this book as his favorite work, and his words attest to its exceptional quality: "I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none." This particular 1919 edition, entitled "Saint Joan of Arc" was illustrated with beautiful artwork of Howard Pyle. First Edition
By The Sieur Louis de Conte (her page and secretary). Freely Translated. by Jean François Alden. Illustrated from Original Drawings by F.V. du Mond. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1896. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth stamped in gold and silver. First Edition, first issue, of Mark Twain's last completed novel -- a fictionalized (and romanticized) version of the life of someone with whom he was fascinated, written as a purported 1492 memoir by Joan of Arc's page and secretary late in his life. Twain said "I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none" [quoted by Greenman]. JOAN OF ARC first appeared serially in Harper's Magazine -- anonymously, since Twain did not want the public to expect (and be disappointed by the absence of) his customary humor; however, he did become known as the author, and for this 461-page first edition his name, though absent from the title page, is present on the binding. This copy is from the first issue, with "The Abbey Shakespeare" as the first book on the ad leaf. It is in fine condition, with less fading of the spine than is typical. This is one of Twain's less-common titles. Blanck 3446.
