Published by Not Stated, Not Stated, 1770
Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). A very scarce, duodecimo copy of this erotic novel by Nicolas Chorier. In the original Latin, this work is extremely scarce in any edition, due to its content. This novel is considered to be the first pornographic work written in Latin. It forms a collection of dialogues with Tullia, an Italian woman in her twenties, who is charged with teaching her young cousin Ottavia about sex and sexuality by Ottavia's mother. To do so, she seduces Ottavia and teaches her in a practical nature. In this writing Chorier defends tribadism, and explores female sexuality. Lacking the main title page, but retaining the half-titles to each section. Therefore, this copy is undated. In Latin. There are very few copies of this work in this pocket sized format. Two parts in one, as called for. This work has been published under many different titles, in several languages. The English title is the 'Dialogues of Luisa Siegea' or 'The School of Women, or the Seven Flirtatious Encounters of Aloisia'. Upon its initial publication, the work was circulated through the libertine community, under various imprints. All details of eighteenth editions of this work on Copac and Worldcat state that the imprints to title pages are false and that they were actually published in Paris. This work is lacking the original title page, so it is difficult to decipher exactly which Latin edition this is. One of the original titles of this work was 'Aloisiae Sigaeae, Toletanae, Satyra sotadica de arcanis Amoris et Veneris'. It was purported to have been written in Spanish by Luisa Sigea de Velasco. De Velasco was a poet and an important intellectual figure during Spanish humanism in the sixteenth century. This work was believed to be her 'Sotadic Satire' on the secrets of love and sex due to the fact that the novel is written from a female perspective. It was believed to then have been translated into the Latin form from the Spanish manuscript by Dutch humanist, Johannes Meursius. This was a fabrication, and the work was actually written by Nicolas Chorier. De Velasco and Meursius had no involvement in the creative process. Nicholas Chorier was a French lawyer, writer and historian. He penned many works on Dauphine, which remain to be important historical sources. However, he is best remembered as the true author of this title. Irregular register and pagination. Register is as follows: A-L12, M7, O6, P12, Q6, R12, S6, T12, V6, X12, Y6, Z12, Aa6, Bb12, Cc6, Dd12, Ee6, Ff11. Pagination is consistent until page 288 where there is some mispagination, throughout the catchwords are correct. The second part of this work is actually 306 pages. A very scarce and important literary work in the genre of erotica. In a contemporary full mottled calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the head and tail of spine. Bookmark ribbon is present. Ink spill to the endpapers. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper in French, 'Achete . 1776'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spot. Pages 181-217 are slightly age toned . Bottom margin to page 227 has been removed. Very Good. book.
Published by (unknown), (unknown), 1680
Leather bound. Full brown leather with 5 raised-bands, small (3.5" x 5.5" x 1 1/8") 166, (2), 238 pp. no illustrations. Both texts are in Latin, and neither has a formal Title-page, but rather both have half-titles only. Quite possible that, due to the nature of the erotic subject matter, there were no title-pages. Kearney, P.J. Private case,; 368. kearney places the publication date of this edition around 1680, which seems approriate for the copy in-hand. Ancient hand-written notes on ffep state this to be a 3rd edition, printed in 1680, in Holland. Quite rare and a nice copy with elaborate gilt tooling on spine. Very early Erotica. No copies found at auction, OCLC locates 4 copies. VG (overall wear and fading to leather boards, internal hinges slightly cracked, age toning as expected but text is otherwise clear.).
