Lyon, Thomas Amaulry, 1687, 2 tomes en 2 vols in-12 , Reliure époque plein veau, dos à nerfs ornés avec titre et tomaison , de (24)-438pp (tome 1) et 439pp-(9) pp) illustrés de 15 planches dont 1 portrait-frontispice, 1 titre gravé 13 planches , la plupart dépliantes .Petite galerie de vers au début du tome 2 , 4 feuillets amputés (pp.89 à 96) de l angle supérieur droit (avec manque de texte), reliure frottée , accident à la coiffe supérieur tome 1 , coins usés Jean Chardin , Diamantaire français , connu pour sa relation de ses séjours en Perse et en Orient à la fin du XVIIe , Fils d un bijoutier protestant, il se rend en Perse et en Inde en 1665 pour y faire le commerce des diamants. Il plaît au roi de Perse, Shah Abbas II, qui le nomme son marchand. De retour en France en 1670, il publie "Le couronnement de Soleïmaan troisième, roy de Perse". Puis il repart pour la Perse en août 1671, en faisant cette fois-ci un long périple qui le mène à Smyrne, à Constantinople, en Crimée, dans le Caucase et en Géorgie. Il arrive à Isfahan en juin 1673, reste quatre ans en Perse et retourne en Inde avant de revenir en Europe en 1680 en passant par le Cap de Bonne-Espérance. Constatant à son retour que les Protestants sont persécutés en France, il se rend en 1681 en Angleterre, où Charles II le fait chevalier et le nomme bijoutier de la cour. Il s y marie et devient membre de la Royal Society en 1682. Chardin se rend ensuite en Hollande en tant que représentant de la Compagnie anglaise des Indes orientales et c est à Amsterdam qu il publie en 1686 la première partie des "Voyages de monsieur le chevalier Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l Orient". Cet ouvrage, qu il ne complète qu en 1711, peut-être avec l aide de François Charpentier, est salué par les philosophes et reçoit les éloges de Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire et Gibbon. P1-3N.

This printing was published at the same time as other French edition, all are considered first editions. In this book Chardin discusses his journeys from Constantinople to the Black Sea, Persia, and throughout the Middle East (Kashan, Iraq; Armenia, Crimea, and Georgia). The end of his journey took him through the Cape of Good Hope, on his way home. Upon his return, he was considered quite a celebrity in London; though, according to Evelyn he was not inclined to talke wonders . He met with famous members of the Royal Society, all of whom took great interest in his voyage. He told them of his witnessing of Abbas II s coronation, and the jewels and fine ornaments he had seen. This second volume from the 1687 French edition was published in Lyon and features a fascinating collection of engravings depicting views of Middle Eastern temples, sepulchers, and city views.
