Hardcover. Condition: Good. Facsimile edition. 286, [2] pages. Many pages uncut. Errata after page 286. Cover has some wear and soiling. Stamp for review purposes on fep and inside rear board. Text pasted inside front and rear boards. Albert Gallatin, Secretary of Treasury under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, declared his intention to establish "in this immense and fast-growing city . a system of rational and practical education fitting and graciously opened to all". A three-day-long "literary and scientific convention" held in City Hall in 1830 and attended by over 100 delegates debated the terms of a plan for a new university. These New Yorkers believed the city needed a university designed for young men who would be admitted based upon merit rather than birthright or social class. On April 18, 1831, the institution that would become NYU was established with the support of a group of prominent New York City residents from the city's merchants, bankers, and traders. Albert Gallatin was elected as its first president. Extract from the work: the legitimate object of a University, is not only the education of youth, but the fuller development of the minds of men; and for this object, the dense and numerous population of a city, creates advantages that are incalculably important. Intellectual communion is so much desired by all men, and especially by the learned, that it is only when the distinguished proficients in any department of knowledge can so cluster together as to form a world of their own, and thus stimulate each other in their common pursuits, that conspicuous excellence can be most successfully developed. The greatest scholars and artists who now adorn the Halls of Science in London and Paris, would never have grown to their giant stature, had they been scattered among the villages or hamlets of France and England. Feeling themselves alone in their views, the sense of solitude of itself would, in some degree, have palsied their efforts, and have induced them either to abandon their aim, or relax in their high pursuits. It is in this contact of mind with mind, that these men of renown have become then- country's ornaments, and blessings to the world.
