Als sie das Spelman College besuchte, unterrichtete dort gerade Howard Zinn, der später vor allem durch sein Werk A People's History of the United States bekannt wurde. Er ermutigte die Studentinnen, sich politisch zu betätigen. Diese Begegnung bestärkte Walker darin, ihr soziales Engagement insbesondere im Civil Rights Movement weiter zu verstärken. Sie nahm an Protestmärschen und Demonstrationen teil und unterstützte nach Ende des Colleges als Sozialarbeiterin verschiedene Wohlfahrts- und Gleichbehandlungs-Programme.
