Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Oblong quarto (11 ¾" x 7 ¼"). Contemporary pebbled cloth over boards and metal spine, lettered in gold on front cover, floral patterned pastedowns. Contains 90 photographs taken with a Kodak No. 2 Brownie camera. The prints measure 3 ¾" x 4 ¾" with a circular image area measuring 3 ½" in diameter. The photographs are neatly mounted side-by-side in pairs on the rectos and versos of 23 thick card leaves, most captioned in pencil and ink on the leaf above the mounted prints. The boards are rubbed and worn at the joints, a few intermittent photographs are lightly faded and rubbed, the final two or three leaves have minor chips and stains, very good overall. An attractive album featuring many vernacular images of a wealthy family based in Kansas City, Missouri. The album includes several candid snapshots of family members and friends out and about Hyde Park and Brush Creek, together with several images of women, many with guitars in hand, enjoying themselves at a retreat on Cooley Lake. Also included are images of a young man of the house (Arthur) out and about with friends at Groton (a private boarding school in Massachusetts); together with several images of sailing vessels at Vineyard Heaven on the Massachusetts coast. Interspersed throughout the album are many images of women, including some on bicycles, and a few men on horseback. A terrific album of vernacular images dating from the beginning of Kodak era, whose cameras made the practice of photography more widely accessible to most Americans.
