Item Description: Paris: Librairie Internationale Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, 1869. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Four volumes bound in two. First edition. Large 8vo. 419, 334, 324, 420 pp. In the publisher's green, diagonal rib-grained, water-patterned cloth. 'Full of Hugolian archetypes, this grotesque romance seems to reflect the promise and the failure of revolutionary ideals that shaped nineteenth century French political history. The hero, Gwynplaine, mutilated by order of the king, has had a smile carved into his face so that he will not be recognized as the heir to a nobleman who refused to accept a Restoration monarchy after the fall of Cromwell's republic. When he discovers his identity, Gwynplaine gives a moving speech to the House of Lords, pleading the cause of the people. The grimace causes the audience to dissolve into hilarity, and the novel ends with the suggestion of Gwynplaine's suicide' . From: New Oxford Companion to Literature. Carteret I, 423. Item Description: Paris: Librairie Internationale, 1869, Paris, 1869. Later Vellum By Riviere. Book Condition: Fine. Later Vellum By Riviere. Fine. 1. 8vo. This book comes from the library of Rugby School, and is so stamped in each volume both on the blank prelim and the half-title. Each volume bears a contemporary bookplate on the front pastedown. The handsome binding by Riviere, carried out in England and possibly slightly later than the publication date, is of full white vellum, gilt ruled, spines gilt decorated in compartments with leather lettering pieces (two of the lettering pieces are scratched), marbled endpapers, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. I purchased these volumes from a bookseller who bought them directly from Rugby School at the school's request. Taken to the right conservator, the stamps could be removed. Item Description: London: Bradbury, Evans, & Co., 1870. 3 vols., 8vo., pp. [x], 299, [3, blank and advertisement leaf]; [x], 289, [1]; [x], 309, [1]; with wood-engraved frontispiece and vignette title on plate paper in each volume, and 6 plates in vol. I, 5 in vol. II, and 3 in vol. III; slightly shaken but a very good copy in the original dark green cloth, pictorially blocked in black on the front covers, lettered gilt.First complete edition in English of Hugo's tragic social novel of human flotsam and jetsam, child-mutilating 'comprachicos', and aristocratic intrigue, set in late 17th century England. 'Full of Hugolian archetypes, this grotesque romance seems to reflect the promise and the failure of revolutionary ideals that shaped 19th century French political history. The hero, Gwynplaine', stolen in childhood and 'mutilated by order of the king, has had a smile carved into his face so that he will not be recognized as the heir to a nobleman who refused to accept monarchy after the fall of Cromwell's republic' (New Oxford Companion to Literature in French). His companions, in a caravan in Southwark, are his beloved Dea, who is blind and thinks that he must be handsome; Ursus, a vagabond; and Homo, a wolf. The attempt at an English setting results in some unintentional humour. When Gwynplaine discovers his identity and is introduced to the House of Lords, his grimace causes the peers to dissolve in laughter, he flees, and the novel ends with Dea's death and the suggestion of Gwynplaine's suicide. The translator, anonymous at the time, was Mrs. A. C. Steele; a condensed version of her translation had been serialized in the Gentleman's Magazine. The illustrator, Luke Fildes, rose to prominence in 1870 with his illustrations to Dickens's unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and for his moving drawing of Dickens's study after his death, entitled 'The Empty Chair'.Sadleir 1236; Wolff 3333. NICE COPY.
