Au premier rang, la poésie d'Éluard aura laissé les vers les plus vibrants, et notamment ce recueil qui contient, divisés en quatre partie, quelque 82 poèmes mettant tour à tour en jeu la pureté, la grâce, l'absence, le manque, le désir et jusqu'à la séparation : « Le front aux vitres comme font les veilleurs de chagrin / Je te cherche par de là l'attente / Par-delà moi-même / Et je ne sais plus tant je t'aime / Lequel de nous deux est absent ». Un des plus beaux recueils de poèmes de Paul Éluard. Précieux exemplaire offert à Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, compagnon de route de la première heure. Si ce dernier était encore plus proche de Louis Aragon et d'André Breton, les liens avec lui furent nombreux au milieu des années 1920, même si Breton et Éluard, qui pensaient au départ pouvoir concilier les contraires, durent vite prendre acte que Drieu dénonce les impasses de la politique, très hostile aux communistes et à leur emprise. La rupture d'avec le groupe surréaliste eut lieu en août 1925, avec en point d'orgue la parution d'une lettre ouverte, « La véritable erreur des surréalistes », publié dans La Nouvelle Revue française : « Vous êtes tout bonnement en train de prendre position. L'hiver dernier, vous aviez déjà pris position littéraire : le surréalisme, une position solide, détaillée, abondamment pourvue de doctrines, d'exemples, de précédents, d'autorité, de disciples, de camelots [.]. Maintenant, vous doublez votre art poétique d'une ligne d'appui politique selon un procédé périodiquement utilisé par les littérateurs en France. Vous vous installez en face des néo-classiques, dans le même secteur étroit, encombré de vieux cadavres et de galimatias de l'autre siècle [.]. » Aragon, autrefois son inséparable, lui répondra en septembre : « Regarde, encore une fois mon ami, avec quelles gens tu te ligues, dans le sens de quelles gens tu abondes [.]. Eh bien, va, mon garçon, puisque tu leur as fait risette, voilà leur appeau [.]. Tu n'es qu'un homme comme les autres, et pitoyable, et peu fait pour montrer leur chemin aux hommes, un homme perdu, et que je perds. Tu t'en vas, tu t'effaces. Il n'y a plus personne au lointain, et, tu l'as bien voulu, ombre, va-t'en, adieu. » La rupture sera moins forte avec Éluard, mais effective après la guerre d'Espagne et plus encore à partir de 1939. Paul Éluard répondra fermement en septembre 1942 à une ultime tentative d'approche de Drieu : « Dans le temps, j'ai eu pour vous, Drieu, de l'estime et une réelle affection. Il y a deux ans j'ai même cru que, grâce aux circonstances, j'allais vous retrouver. Vous vous étonnez, paraît-il, de mon attitude envers vous. Mettons-la, pour rester très général, sur le compte d'un certain avis qui rend responsable de n'importe quel ?crime' (sic) des hommes, des femmes et des ENFANTS qui en sont innocents. J'ai trop de cousins ! ».

Magnifique provenance sur le « livre sans fin », dédié à Gala, au moment où Man Ray commence sa relation amoureuse avec Lee Miller. Tous ne se quitteront plus, jusqu'aux étés de la Garoupe, où les couples Nusch et Paul Éluard, Man Ray et Ady Fidelin, Roland Penrose et Lee Miller, Pablo Picasso et Dora Maar passeront trois étés « chaleureux ». Éluard et Man Ray s'associeront en 1936 pour Facile, avant que Man Ray n'illustre l'année suivante Les Mains libres. Après la période américaine, Man Ray ne reviendra en France que peu de temps avant la mort d'Éluard et, malgré tout, collaboreront à nouveau. Man Ray a fait monter en tête de l'ouvrage un exemplaire sur papier rose d'À toute épreuve, publiée aux Éditions Surréalistes en 1930. « Trémois » est absent du Fléty, mais il s'agit probablement du nom de la galerie M.-P. Trémois de Madeleine et Paul Trémois, avenue Rapp, qui fut active jusqu'en 1932. On connaît deux autres exemplaires de la bibliothèque de Man Ray reliés à l'identique : l'un pour Le Point du jour, dédicacé par Breton ; l'autre par Aragon dans son Traité du style. Il est probable que le commanditaire soit Man Ray lui-même, et que sa bibliothèque le suivra aux États-Unis, où il repart en 1940, jusqu'en 1951. Le volume contient une fiche ancienne d'une librairie américaine - où l'exemplaire est catalogué -, datée « NY 1950 » : Man Ray, avant son retour à Paris, aurait donc vendu tout ou partie de ses ouvrages sur place. L'exemplaire aurait sans doute été acquis alors par l'ambassadeur de France à New York, Henri Hoppenot. Il restera ensuite dans la bibliothèque du diplomate, dont il provient. Bon exemplaire en simple reliure d'époque ; quelques rousseurs sur l'exemplaire d'À toute épreuve ; dos du cartonnage passé.
