About this Item: Putnam. London. (1934) 1935 1st UK edition. 8vo (141 x 221mm). Ppxiv,208,map. B/w photograph plates, map. Black cloth, gilt titles to spine. Cloth slightly worn, top of spine slightly frayed, slight foxing, tape marks to preliminaries. Working copy, lacks dust-wrapper. "First published in Hungary, December, 1934" under the title, Elefantorszag. Count Zsigmond Szechenyi was famous as a sportsman and big game hunter in his own country. He published over a dozen books, a number of which were translated into other languages. Szechenyi was commercially successful: his first book, Csui!., ran to ten editions, selling 351,650 copies whilst a number of his later books sold over 100,000 copies each in Hungarian. He assembled an important library of hunting books which survived the war and was purchased from him by the Communist government in the 1960's. He was also the founder of the Hungarian National Museum. Despite being an aristocrat, Szechenyi was in good odour with the Communists, worked for the forestry department, and led the official government expedition to East Africa in 1960. In this, his second book, he gives a detailed account of his big-game hunting exploits in British East Africa in the early 1930's when a reliable air service, marble-halled banks and "three brand-new, four-storied .lift-band-and-wireless-equipped" hotels had just arrived in Nairobi. Chapters include: The coast of civilisation; Elephant hunting is not all roses; Witch doctor; Bongo; Sick; Bongo again; Preoccupations of an African station-master; The greater kudu; Propitiatory breakfast; A Christmas elephant hunt; Termites; Buffalo; No buffalo; Lions and a camera; Sitatunga; Lions; Ivory; An end.
