About this Item: Saalfield, Akron. OH, 1904. Hard cover. Condition: Good+. First Edition. Good. No dust jacket. ; Includes illustrations. ; Color Plates; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 180 pages; HC bound in original dark blue cloth with elaborate decorative binding depicting an elephant carried aloft to the stars and moon by a hot air balloon. Pictorial design stamped in silver and gray. Illustrated with color plates by Winifred Elrod. Binding sound but a little cocked. One of the seven color plates missing (at pg 76) . Just light rub to cloth at tips and a touch heavier at spine ends with very mild fray at latter. Prior owner name in the script of an 8 or 9 year old to the front blank end page, dated 1933 and with a small ink drawing of a house and two small, orderly doodles. Elrod, original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in black and silver, spine panel stamped in silver, First edition. A sequel to THE WONDERFUL ELECTRIC ELEPHANT (1903) in which the young protagonists travel to the planets in a balloon attached to the mechanical elephant. Several of the planets visited are utopian (Venus; Jupiter; Uranus), others dystopian (Mars is warlike, Saturn the literal Hell where Earth people are tortured).
