Original Red Cloth Hardback. Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. 1972. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies, of which this is number 473. 139pp. Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969) was an English novelist. She was awarded the 1955 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for her novel 'Mother and Son'. Her works consist mainly of dialogue and focus on family life among the late Victorian or Edwardian upper middle class. 'The Last and the First' was her last work and first published posthumously in 1971. A uniform, limited edition of her works, with the exception of 'Dolores', was issued by Victor Gollancz. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling to the spine. The book is in very good condition and the contents are tight and clean. There is no inscription and the copy number is handwritten on the copyright page. The unclipped dustwrapper is also very good with some shelf wear and light soiling. The spine is slightly faded with light bumping and small nicks at the spine ends. There are also small nicks on the top corners. The dustwrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
