Book First Edition
Brown Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Edward Lear and others (illustrator). First Edition. 1938. First edition. 24pp, a colour frontispiece and 20 full-page line drawings by Edward Lear. Edward Lear (1812-1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, now best known for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks. He also travelled widely and wrote of his journeys. After an introduction by Granville Proby, this book contains twenty drawings by Lear, made when touring Sicily in July 1847 in the company of John Joshua Proby (the great-uncle of the writer of the introduction). The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and a small black drawing on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and a 4 1/2" line of bubbling to the cloth on the front board. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and first eight pages, including the title-page. There is a little scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. There is partial offsetting to the free endpapers and a set of initials has been written on the top corner of the front fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and bumping and nicks to the corners and spine ends with small pieces missing from the spine corners. There is a tear of about 1 3/4" on the top rear spine edge and one across the top of the spine and these tears have been repaired on the reverse with tape. There are unreopauired tears of about 1" on the bottom front spine edge and top rear corner. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
