First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Good Plus, Not Clipped. First Edition. Illustrated. 215 pages. Limited to 500 hand numbered copies. No other printing until 1946. No trade first edition was ever published. In 1946 a second UK edition and a first US edition were released. Percy Boomer was from the Isle of Jersey (as was Harry Vardon) and won the Belgian Open in 1923, the Swiss Open in 1924 and the Dutch Open in 1927. His brother, Aubrey Boomer, and his son, Percy George, known as George, also were professional golfers. While a proven competitor, Percy Boomer was far more effective as an instructor, becoming one of the world's outstanding teachers, Professional at St. Cloud International outside of Paris, then Sunningdale outside of London. A cult following around Boomer has developed, for while he did not 'invent' the inside-to-out swing, he did much to popularize it. The dust jacket is a vital part of the instruction offered inside the book. It was meant to be kept and used (so stated on the dust jacket) to create a vivid impression of one of the key points in the book, made on page 115. Boomer was quick to use the image of 'swinging inside a barrel' to emphasize compact turning, and it became a 'trademark' phrase for him. This is one of only three golf books published in 1942, and the only golf book printed in Great Britain during that brutal year of WWII. Wartime economy standards imposed on the printing industry left them scrambling for every supply, as indicated by the poor quality of the paper used in producing this book. Very scarce and collectible book. Blue book cloth faded on spine extending onto the cover, several small inexplicable indents lower spine, no other marks, stains, or scratches. Former owner name dated 1944 upper ffep. Top page edges red stain bright and complete. Pastedowns and contents clean and undamaged. Important original (the dust jacket also indicated as a limited edition of 500 numbered copies) unclipped dust jacket foxed and toned, one inch loss lower spine, upper spine edge chipped, now protected by mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Limited Edition.
