Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Three-Quarter Leather. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Quaint advice over 220 pages for young women during the early 19th Century, broken into chapters on such subjects as the defense of women on the charge of instability; the indispensible piety of females; promiscuous dancing assemblies; on romance and religion. The book had been controversial, for in this Second Edition the publisher saw fit to explain in a note that the author had been told by "censorious people that her characters bore a strong resemblance to persons of their acquaintance" and that her intention had been "to hold them up to public contempt." Presumably, those matters were revised in this Second Edition. Red leather on marbled boards, with gilt decorations. Corners gently bumped. Light professional restoration to hinges and spine. Contemporary penciled notations, including name of previous owner, on inside cover and fep. Tightly bound. Very little foxing. Only flaw is that parts of page 103 and 105 have been scissored out. Faint dampstaining on title page.
