Edwin a toutes les qualités nécessaires pour expliquer une carrière aussi brillante ; c'est un fonceur qui ne s'embarrasse pas d'états d'âme et ne se préoccupe pas trop de son entourage. Sa fortune colossale il l'a acquise en provoquant sciemment la faillite de certaines entreprises pour les racheter à bas prix et en profitant sans scrupules de l'industrie de la guerre. Que certains de ses amis aient disparu dans la tourmente il fait semblant de ne pas s'en apercevoir que Clara ait toujours été éperdument amoureuse de lui il prétend l'ignorer. Chacun donc a vécu de son côté. Edwin s'est marié sans même inviter Clara à la cérémonie elle s'est mariée à son tour sans jamais oublier Edwin installé de l'autre côté du lac sur la rive ensoleillée tandis qu'elle sombrait peu à peu dans la solitude et la gêne. Cet amour pathétique et silencieux raconté par le fils de Clara n'est pas seulement une histoire musicale du siècle. Leben und Werk: Urs Widmer ist der Sohn des Schweizer Übersetzers, Literaturkritikers und Gymnasiallehrers Walter Widmer. Häufiger Gast im Hause Widmer war der deutsche Autor Heinrich Böll. Urs Widmers Deutschlehrer am Realgymnasium war der Autor Rudolf Graber. Urs studierte in Basel, Montpellier und in Paris Germanistik, Romanistik und Geschichte. 1966 wurde er an der Universität Basel mit einer Arbeit über die deutsche Nachkriegsprosa promoviert. Anschliessend begann er als Verlagslektor zunächst beim Walter Verlag in Olten, wechselte dann nach Deutschland zum Suhrkamp-Verlag in Frankfurt am Main. Den Verlag verliess er bald wieder, nicht aber die Stadt Frankfurt, wo er von 1967 bis 1984 als freier Schriftsteller lebte. In dieser Zeit schrieb er Kritiken für die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung und lehrte als Dozent für neuere deutsche Literatur an der Universität Frankfurt. 1968 debütierte Widmer als Schriftsteller mit der Erzählung Alois. 1969 gehörte er zu den Mitbegründern des Verlag der Autoren, in dem seine Theaterstücke noch heutzutage erscheinen. 1984 kehrte er in die Schweiz zurück. Er lebt in Zürich, ist mit einer Psychoanalytikerin verheiratet und hat eine Tochter. Urs Widmers umfangreiches Werk umfasst Romane, Erzählungen, Essays, Theaterstücke und Hörspiele. Seine Stärke ist nach Ansicht der Literaturkritik das fantasievolle, ironische Ausspinnen trivialer Handlungsschemata der klassischen Abenteuer- und Reisegeschichte bis hin zur Parodie und zum Surrealen. Widmer will einerseits Fiktion" schreiben, aber dabei auch möglichst viel gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit spürbar werden lassen."[1] Besonderen Eindruck hat seine (pseudo-)autobiografische Trilogie über seine Mutter (Der Geliebte der Mutter, 2000), seinen Vater (Das Buch des Vaters, 2004) und sich selbst (Ein Leben als Zwerg, 2006) bei den Rezensenten hinterlassen. Darin werde deutlich, wie das doppelbödige Spiel seiner Eltern einer burlesken Fassade vor einem ernsten Hintergrund auch seinen späteren Schreibstil beeinflusst hat. Läse man den Roman Der Geliebte der Mutter als autobiographischen Text, so würde der Autor darin damit kokettieren, der Sohn des einflussreichen Schweizer Unternehmers und Dirigenten Paul Sacher zu sein, was dem Text einen peinlichen Beigeschmack verliehe. Die Ambiguität des Textes zwingt nicht zu einer solchen Lesart, hält sie aber offen. Sein Theaterstück Top Dogs, eine Sozialsatire, präsentierte Widmer mit dem Regisseur Volker Hesse beim Berliner Theatertreffen 1997. Aus entlassenen Führungskräften, den sogenannten Top Dogs", werden dort Underdogs". In einem Outplacement-Center erleben sie das Grauen und das Groteske, das sie Anderen durch ihre Entlassung zugefügt haben, an sich selbst. Nach dem Vorbild seines Vaters übersetzt auch Urs Widmer Bücher anderer Autoren.
